Tool-mounted Ring Displays for Intraoperative Navigation

3D image guidance systems help operators navigate an ablation probe towards a lesion inside a patient and view the placement of instruments relative to patient anatomy. However, such methods disconnect the patient from the operator, who must switch views between a computer screen and the patient. We propose an approach that harnesses the benefits of image-guided probe navigation with an on-device LED ring display, so that operators can keep their attention on the patient and probe without having to continually view a computer screen. A study evaluated the performance of this on-probe display, which suggests that despite decreases in task completion time, the LED ring display is sufficiently accurate for probe placement and warrants further implementation and translation into medical settings.
